Dayton Engineer

Dr. Chris Vehar Jutte ‘02, now a contractor with NASA, recently came back to her alma mater this spring to discuss engineering as a vocation for the common good. During her discussion with current students, she shared her own vocational journey, which included being part of a group of students who started what is now the Ethos Center. 

The University of Dayton’s Flyer Pitch awarded top prizes from among 100 applicants to a new rapid test to detect disease among farm animals and crops; a social enterprise to promote better health for Black Americans; and a nonprofit dedicated to helping fatherless teen girls. 

For many undergraduate students in the School of Engineering, research is an integral part of their time as Flyers. Two students currently conducting research with associate professor Dr. Brad Ratliff in his Applied Sensing Lab have found a future career interest in research thanks to the experience. 

As the engineering industry rapidly evolves, there is a constant flow of new ideas into the School of Engineering to ensure students are prepared to make an impact in the workforce. The Dean’s Cabinet, a working group of faculty and staff leading initiatives aligned with the School’s strategic vision, are working hard to make those ideas a reality.

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor Kim Bigelow was awarded the status of Fellow in the American Society of Biomechanics (ASB). She will be recognized at the annual ASB conference in August.
