Internet of Things (IoT)

Enabling a Smarter World

UDRI works with industry and government clients to clarify needs and to design, develop, and integrate Internet of Things (IoT) solutions.

Our researchers have developed and implemented IoT systems that monitor sensor data on building and facility systems in order to predict and avoid maintenance issues before a system outage can occur. These IoT device code translation solutions centralize and manage Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system data from across machines and sensors from any manufacturer, pulling all data into a common format despite non-standardized data register names on each connected device.

In 2016, the University of Dayton, in partnership with Emerson Electric, opened The Helix Innovation Center where much of our industrial Internet of Things research is tested. The Helix's full-scale, simulated environments include a working commercial kitchen, a two-story residential home, a grocery store, a data center and the whole facility as a commercial building. Teams use the facility to generate new ideas and test them under real-world conditions.

Capabilities

  • Collaboration with device manufacturers to integrate existing off-the-shelf IoT technologies with custom UDRI-developed IoT technologies
  • IoT solution design, including fusion of various platforms and technologies, in order to extract data from hardware devices such as HVAC units and send the data to mobile applications
  • IoT standards development that enable disparate IoT devices to interoperate seamlessly
  • Mobile application development that provides IoT data analytics as well as command-and-control of IoT-linked devices
