UD launches Urban Leadership Academy with Dayton Public Schools

The University of Dayton’s new Urban Leadership Academy partnership with Dayton Public Schools will prepare educators for positions to guide the district’s future.

Eleven teachers and administrators in the first cohort will begin classes in May for the online education leadership master’s degree or principal licensure programs. The academy offers them discounted tuition and additional leadership opportunities and support from Dayton Public Schools.

“This partnership makes it easier for passionate educators to pursue the advanced education they need to become administrative leaders,” said School of Education and Health Sciences Dean Ali Carr-Chellman. “The programs will equip them with the skills to address the challenges facing schools post-COVID, including closing learning gaps and supporting students' emotional well-being."

Lisa Minor, Dayton Public Schools associate superintendent, said the district is committed to ensuring all staff interested in expanding their opportunities have the support and encouragement they need to be successful.  

“We are excited about the wonderful staff members who will grow and learn together not only through their classes at the University of Dayton, but also simultaneously receive job embedded leadership opportunities through our summer programming and throughout the school year,” she said.  

“At the Dayton Public Schools, we know members of the academy will represent the next generation of leaders, continuing to bring excellence in education for years to come. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to partner with the University of Dayton as part of our mission and vision of making sure we have ‘Achievement for All’ in the city of Dayton,” she said.

Gianna Rossi, a teacher at Ponitz Career Technology Center and a University of Dayton alumnus of the Urban Teacher Academy, said she wanted to pursue the Academy to further her education and make a difference in the district and the community as a whole.

“This program will allow me to collaborate with other educators in the district,” she said.” I am so grateful to be given this opportunity to grow.”
