Additional Projects and Initiatives
Farmer’s Market

The Farmers Market is a weekly event hosted by Dayton during the fall semester which brings local businesses right to campus as well as some student organizations. It's a great opportunity to get local produce, learn more about small business or just walk around and enjoy the booths. Email us to learn more

Earth Fest

Earth Fest is an annual event put on by University of Dayton Campus Recreation Outdoor Education Center at Old River Park to celebrate Earth Day. It offers many activities for UD students like kayaking, fly-fishing, Art in the Park, live music, local food trucks and vendors and much more. The HSI Student Leader Program supports this event by helping with the planning process, tabling at the event, sorting waste and leading special projects such as garden tours during the event.

Old River Park Garden Days

HSI Student Leaders collaborate with the Facilities Management Office of Sustainability and Energy in the Old River Park Campus Garden with Garden Days. These volunteer opportunities are weekly in the spring to start seeds and plant the garden. Old River Park Garden produce is used by University of Dayton Catering Services and sold at the Flyer Farmer’s Market in the fall semesters.

Sustainability Week

Sustainability week is full of events centered around a chosen theme. We host guest speakers, thrift stores, informational sessions and all sorts of fun and educational events open to all students and faculty. This week is hosted by Sustainability Club and  done in collaboration with the HSI Student Leaders and many other organizations. Sustainability week typically takes place during the fall semester.

Local Business Spotlight

Shopping locally is a great way to be more sustainable while also exploring the city you live in. These local business spotlights are a great place to start. Once a month, the Food and Growing team takes UD students on excursions to different spots in Dayton, from Patchwork to Second Street Market to the Oregon District.

Student Sustainability Leadership Council

The Student Sustainability Leadership Council is a collaborative council composed of five large student-run organizations that focus on campus sustainability. This council works to increase communication of different sustainability projects and initiatives occurring across campus, increase collaboration between different organizations, quantify achievements and identify gaps on campus from a sustainability perspective. This is a small and focused council that works to create a united student led sustainability front on campus. The following are the five core organizations: The Hanley Sustainability Institute, the Hanley Sustainability Fund, Student Government Association Sustainability Committee, Sustainability Club and Flyer Enterprise.

Zero Waste Move-In

Through Zero Waste Move-In, students are asked to reduce what you bring to campus, reuse what you already have or buy secondhand and recycle waste from any packaging used during move-in day at the University of Dayton.

Past Projects and Initiatives

Student leaders have guided several other projects in the past that have added to the Hanley Sustainability Institute's impact at the University of Dayton. Sustainability projects have taken place on and off campus.
