The University of Dayton will be issuing the Healthy Minds Study to all undergraduate students from February 20-March 10, 2023. This is an opportunity to make your voice heard and impact the future of UD as we seek to enhance the quality and accessibility of mental health and wellbeing programs, services, and initiatives. The survey provides students with a chance to reflect on important topics in your life and in your campus community, providing insight into both your struggles and successes. The data collected in the Healthy Minds Study will assist the University of Dayton in understanding the mental health, wellbeing, and emotional needs of our students, which will serve to guide the allocation of resources and inform future services and interventions.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Healthy Minds Study (HMS) is an annual survey-based study examining mental health and related wellbeing topics and service utilization among college students. Coordinated by the University of Michigan School of Public Health, the HMS survey has been issued at over 450 universities and colleges with over a half million respondents since its national launch in 2007.

All undergraduate students at the University of Dayton are asked to participate in this survey.

We are asking all undergraduate students at the University of Dayton to complete the Healthy Minds Study survey. The data will provide an aggregate look into UD student mental health, to include information around health habits, behaviors, and perceptions within our community. The survey will explore mental health, physical activity, sleep, alcohol and drug utilization, as well as personal safety and power based violence.

The results will be used to better understand the mental health and wellbeing climate at the University of Dayton, as well as growing needs and service utilization. The data collected will guide the allocation of resources and inform future policies, services and interventions in order to create an environment that will allow students to succeed, thrive, and matter at UD and beyond.

Melissa Longino, the Assistant Vice President, Health and Wellbeing, is the signatory on the recruiting and reminder emails. The email sender will appear as ‘healthyminds-UD@umich.edu' from UD Health and Wellbeing. Look out for the recruitment email in your inbox on February 20, 2023 with your personalized link to the online survey.

You do not have to participate in this survey, and if you do participate, you may skip any question you are not comfortable answering and may exit the survey at any time.

At the end of the survey, all respondents will receive a list of local mental health resources. Students who indicate suicidal thoughts in the recent past or screen positively for a mental health condition (e.g., depression or anxiety) will also be presented with tailored resources and a special note emphasizing the importance of getting in touch with one of the listed resources.

If you are in immediate need of mental health support, call UD Public Safety at 937.229.2121 and ask for the crisis therapist on-call. During business hours Monday-Friday from 8:30a-4:30p, you are encouraged to contact the Counseling Center at 937.229.3141, as both crisis appointments and drop-in sessions are available. UD offers a variety of mental health services for students. Visit our Health and Wellbeing website to learn more.

Yes, your answers will be confidential. When you complete the survey, the link with your email and IP address will be broken so that no one will be able to connect these with your survey answers. The results will be presented to the University of Dayton in summary form as an aggregate report that allows data comparison against all participating institutions. All data-set information is de-identified.

Identifying information will only be used by the HMS research team to recruit students to the survey. This information will then be stored securely and separately from the response data, and destroyed once it is no longer of use. HMS personnel further protect data using the rights granted to their team under a Certificate of Confidentiality.

Participating in this study is an opportunity to make your voice heard. Our success depends on gathering a large scope of diverse student perspectives across campus. The confidential information provided from this study reflects student day-to-day experiences on campus, and provides insights into both your struggles and successes. The goal of this survey is to gain data-driven information to inform policy, practice, and funding for programs and services on campus, thus bettering student life at UD.

The survey is sponsored by the University of Michigan. The main Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the Healthy Minds Study is maintained under Advarra, a provider of IRB services in North America.

Our goal is to foster a safe and supportive environment where students can flourish, both academically and personally. To understand the climate at the University of Dayton, we need to ask direct questions about topics that some may find sensitive. Please note, you may skip any question you are not comfortable answering and may exit the survey at any time.

This survey should take most people approximately 25-30 minutes to complete. The survey does not need to be completed in one sitting, as the personalized link allows individuals to progress through the survey as schedules permit, picking up where you left off.
