One of the most common characteristics of autism is the existence of special interests, or interests that are very focused. The majority of autistic people have one or more special interests that can vary in topic. The interest can provide structure, order and predictability, and help people manage the uncertainties of daily life. They can give someone a way to start conversations and feel more self-assured in social situations and help someone to relax and feel happy. They can also be helpful for building friendships. Some even expand on them to create a successful career. Come enjoy an evening of gaming and crafting, or bring your own special interest to enjoy in our sensory-safe space! All neurotypical and neurodiverse people are welcome.
Location: Marianist Hall Commons

College campuses can often be overwhelming and overstimulating. During Autism Acceptance Week we welcome all community members to experience the Sensory Friendly Space. The purpose of this space is to provide a comforting and safe space to relax, retreat from sensory overload, sensory seek, or stim. Elements of the space will include: stim toys, ambient lighting, noise canceling ear buds, bracelet making, alternative seating options, weighted lap pads, and resources to learn more about neurodiversity. No reservation is necessary to use the space.
